MITCHELL SCUBA COLLEGE
SWIM REQUIREMENTS FOR THE NAUI SCUBA DIVER COURSE

Your swimming evaluation will be held in this pool on the first night of your Scuba Diver Class.

NAUI'S MOTTO IS "DIVE SAFETY THROUGH EDUCATION".
MITCHELL SCUBA'S MOTTO IS "LEARN IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME".
Most people who sign up for my Scuba Diver Course have no problem with the swimming evaluation. The importance of being comfortable in the water and having the ability to maintain normal swimming skills are the most basic building blocks for Scuba diving. I look forward to meeting you in my Scuba Courses. There is no better or safer Scuba Course offered anywhere in the San Francisco Bay Area. There are no Scuba facilities in the S.F. Bay Area that have a better safety record than Mitchell Scuba. All of my Scuba students and all of the Scuba Divers certified by me have been 100% safe and accident free.

It is in the interest of safety and also good common sense, to be able to complete the 250 yard swim, 50 foot underwater swim, and 10 minute treading water exercises. PLEASE NOTE: If you can't complete these exercises you won't be able to continue with the class. If you have not been swimming for a while please go to any pool and get your "swimming muscles" back into shape. It may have been easy to swim 250 yards a few years ago; that doesn't mean you can jump into the pool after a long absence from swimming and swim 250 yards with comfort and ease. If you are unsure that you will be able to complete these three evaluations, please go to a pool and practice before the first night of class.

THE 250 YARD SURFACE SWIM
The 250 yard swim is non-stop and is not a timed swim. You may use any combination of strokes for 10 lengths (5 laps) of the pool. Each pool length is 25 yards and each lap is two lengths or 50 yards. The whole idea is to be able to swim the distance and not be winded, tired, out of breath, or stressed. Please remember that Scuba diving is done in water deeper than you can stand in, and the dives normally take place in the ocean.

THE 50 FOOT UNDERWATER SWIM
The 50 foot underwater swim is really a breath holding exercise. If you can hold your breath for 20 seconds you should have no problem with the 50 foot underwater swim. Swimming 50 feet underwater on one breath is a basic skill exercise and can be done by anybody with normal swimming skills and healthy lungs. 50 feet is about two-thirds the length of the 75 foot (25 yard) pool.

THE 10 MINUTE TREADING WATER EXERCISE
*The ten minute treading water exercise is a safety exercise to make sure you can just "hang out and relax" while in the water.
